Cetinje: President Vujanović Attends the Commemorative Session Marking the Death of Writer Mirko Kovač
President of Montenegro, Filip Vujanović attended the commemorative session in Cetinje , which was held to mark the death of writer Mirko Kovač.

With respect and remembrance of one of the greatest South Slavic writers and writers of our time Mirko Kovač, we hereby convey the address of President Vujanović during the presentation of the Njegoš’s awards held on 13 November 2009 in Cetinje :

Honorable Mr. Kovač ,
Esteemed High Dignitaries ,
Distinguished Guests ,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

I was given a great honor to award " Njegoš’s Award " to this yearČs winner, writer Mirko Kovač for his book of short stories "Roses for Nives Cohen ," published by the publishing house "Fraktura" in 2005.

Major Montenegrin award for literature was named after a poet whose work is a part of the most illustrious works among South Slavic peoples , and he is among the European giants such as Milton , Dante or Shakespeare .

Njegoš belongs to the famous dynasty of rulers and writers who were building our political history for centuries, promoted the institutions of the state and created Montenegrin independence and freedom.

As a ruler, he became a part of our history and eternal remembrance, and as the poet he created a work of unmatched aesthetic value and range, saying that the poet is the “small creator closest to a deity " and that the whole world is the work of art created to measure beauty. That is why "Luča" reads , "All things mortal and immortal / in their entirety / are fathered by poetry ."

Njegoš’s poetic words and thoughts represent a cultural, historical and spiritual synthesis of Montenegro , the foundation of our language and identity that makes us visible and respected in Europe. His wondrous spirituality connected us with the deepest mysteries of human existence, exalted to metaphysical heights, becoming the value against which we establish our standards and experience.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

In the rich literary history of Montenegro , which is rightly joined by the writer Mirko Kovač, important works were created including a Doclean Benedictine Priest’s chronicles of the twelfth century , MiroslavČs Gospel , the Epistle of Peter I, the masterpieces created in Njegoš’s literary oeuvre . Literature is a testimony to the cultural valuation of a people, the degree of its civilization range, which is reflected in the intellectual and political climate.

Mirko Kovač drew the attention of our reading public by his entire literary work, novels, essays, plays and short stories. His storytelling came to full expression in this collection of short stories "Roses for Nives Cohen." Extraordinary literary style, both classic and modern, blending the real and the super- realistic, Kovač wrote biographies of his characters exploring into strange and almost mystical paths of human destiny .

Whether it is thematically related to the Herzegovinian province or urban areas , whether his characters are intellectuals , unrealized artists or immigrants, the authorČs concern is always a man placed at the borderline between life and death, Eros and Thanatos , good and evil. Kovač possesses a gift of a careful observer, almost snapshotting life vividly describing it without bias or moralistic messages.

Each of the 16 collected stories in the award-winning book is a whole, woven of many cultural symbols and details that make it credible. Alike in the prose of his friend Danilo Kiš, Kovač will find inspiration in ordinary people, those who have not earned the attention of the official historiography. Thus, the writer shows that the seemingly irrelevant biographies can always serve as a major literary theme. Finally, it was the first-rate artistic task of Kovač, which was successfully accomplished - to aesthetically impressively illuminate the existential drama and everyday life in which ideology , politics and history are tragically intertwined .

Mirko Kovač’s prose was written in a refined aesthetic style, inspired by the human impulse; the confirmation that we are capable of creative, human way of being and the spiritual and moral transformation.

It was written to realize true human values and ways. To last in time. To confront and overcome those who undeservedly and transiently made arbitrary decisions about the values that they had not known.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Finally, I shall wrap up with the words of one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, Borges : "All that was read lives in a reader by repeating itself in the memories of others ... We read to find happiness to find wisdom. "

Is finding of that BorgesČ happiness and wisdom the detection of the path that we are going to follow, and is it is possible to decipher that path. Our laureate in his short story, which became the title of his book, says "my flaw is that I go in one direction, and find myself on the other side. But what bothers me are some strange powers around us and in us, I do not really know where they are located and who can figure them out. "
